Cement Rendering

Cement Rendering

Cement rendering, also known as cement-based render or cement plastering, is a common method of coating exterior walls to provide a protective and decorative finish. It involves applying a mixture of cement, sand, and water to the surface of the wall.

Here are some key aspects of cement rendering:

  1. Mixture: The primary ingredients in cement rendering are cement, sand, and water. The ratio of these components may vary depending on factors such as the desired strength, texture, and application method. Additional additives, such as lime or acrylic polymers, can be included to enhance certain properties.
  2. Application: Cement render is typically applied in several layers. The first layer, called the scratch coat, is a thicker mixture that provides a good bonding surface. It is applied with a trowel and then scratched with a comb-like tool to create ridges, allowing the next layer to adhere better. The subsequent layers, known as the float coat and the setting coat, are applied to achieve the desired thickness and smoothness.
  3. Adhesion and Durability: Cement rendering forms a strong bond with the underlying wall surface, creating a durable and long-lasting coating. It offers good resistance to weathering, including exposure to sunlight, rain, and temperature changes. However, it can be prone to cracking if the underlying structure experiences movement or settling. Versatility: Cement rendering can be applied to various substrates, including brick, concrete, stone, and blockwork. It can be used on both new constructions and existing buildings as part of renovations or repairs. The final appearance can be customized through different application techniques, finishes, and texturing methods.
  4. Finishes: Cement rendering can be finished in various ways to achieve different aesthetic effects. Common finishes include sponge float, which creates a textured and slightly rough surface; trowel finish, which provides a smoother and more polished appearance; and bagging or bagged finish, which involves rubbing the surface with a hessian bag to create a textured pattern.
  5. Maintenance: Over time, cement rendering may require maintenance to address cracks, chips, or other forms of damage. Regular inspection and timely repairs can help preserve its integrity and appearance.

It’s important to note that cement rendering requires skill and experience to achieve a high-quality finish. Hiring a professional renderer or contractor is recommended to ensure proper preparation of the substrate, correct mixture proportions, and appropriate application techniques.

Additionally, before undertaking any rendering work, it’s crucial to consider factors such as climate, building regulations, and the specific requirements of your project. Consulting with experts in the field can provide valuable guidance and help you make informed decisions.

Jay truly exceeded our expectations!! He mixed a unique colour for our render to blend with our roof tiles and showed impeccable workmanship completing our project in under a week, without compromising quality. I was concerned there may be cracks but 5 years later and the colour is still in tact and I’m yet to find a crack. I’d definitely recommend Jay’s services to family and friends. Keep up the great work!
